When I taught you English Literature during July and August 2010, I had a creative-writing assignment. This was the Poetry contest, and the poems I presented during class had similes, metaphors, rhyme besides other literary devices. There were also three winners (all boys!), and also a song composed for a poem written by two girls.
Now, I have another creative-writing contest. Instead of Poetry, you shall write Prose instead. Prose means story.
This Prose contest requires you to write a story in 98 words, no more and no less. In other words, your story has to be written in only 98 words.
Here is an example:
Jane fell in love with Cookie the moment she saw it. Jane’s mother had given the dog to her for her thirteenth birthday, and Jane never spent a day without Cookie by her side. Cookie had soft, silky fur and a pair of brown eyes which shimmered under the sunlight. One day, Cookie was gone, and Jane’s heart almost stopped. She went to look for her mother, and her mother took Cookie out of the washing machine. “I’m sorry, honey, I forgot that soft toys can only be dry-washed. And now Cookie is falling apart from the water…”
The above story about Cookie, a toy dog that Jane got for her birthday, is written in 98 words.
I hope that all of you would spend this school holiday, exploring the power of writing and putting your imagination to good use! :)
I shall pick the top three winners, and will reward those stories which I like. I have not thought of what prizes to give, but I promise that the winners will get their rewards. Please kindly either submit your 98-word stories through a private Facebook message, or send to my email: *************
You can send as many stories as you wish. Please also send all your stories before 05 December 2010, Sunday.
By the way, I may be returning to New Town in February 2011.

It was not a typical day for her, as today is her birthday. Anna is always happy on this day, probably because, she is very fond of opening presents. Every year Anna throws a big birthday party, and invites many friends, so they would give her presents. After the party is over, she would dash towards her presents and rip of the paper covering the contents, and squeal at everything she finds. Anna’s parents were usually upset of mess she would make with empty wrapping paper all over the floor, but that’s what happens when you open presents.
